Canggu Bali Hotels and Homestays – Top 6 Midrange 2018

Canggu Bali Hotels and Homestays – Top 6 Midrange 2018

As a long term traveler I typically like staying at places that are in the mid budget range – no more that $30/night and no more than $400/month if I’m staying a while. I’m not a backpacker.  I like having a private bathroom. I like to leave the party at the party, and value my comfort, peace and quiet. I also enjoy surfing at a surf break called “Old Man’s”, which is about 200 meters from Batu Bolong beach, so the closer to Batu Bolong the better.  After living here on and off since 2015, here are the top 6 Canggu Bali hotels and homestays that I enjoyed staying at most in order of preference.  You may click on the name of each homestay to book:

Leo Homestay

Leo Homestay - Canggu Bali Hotels

Price: $15/night

Monthly price: Around $325/month

Cleanliness: The rooms are very clean, but there is a bit of clutter in the outdoor common areas

Comfort: Very comfortable, I always sleep well here.

Wifi: Yes, it’s slow but the wifi in Bali is generally not the fastest.  It is however, enough for doing most standard tasks online. Streaming video is gonna be a bit tough though.

Air Conditioning: Yes

Hot Water: No.  If a hot shower is a must for you, I’d recommend looking elsewhere.  It took me a bit to get used to the cold water shower. I had to make a conscious decision to shower mainly during the day when it was warmer.

Noise level: Exceptionally quiet and peaceful.

Friendliness: The staff is warm and welcoming

Leo Homestay is located just a few minutes walk from Batu Bolong beach on Batu Bolong road.  It’s a very social environment which makes it easy to meet and interact with other travelers or longer term residents of Canggu.  It’s not quite as nice as other Canggu Bali hotels or homestays, and only has a cold shower, but it’s very affordable. Additionally, its close proximity from the beach make it an exceptional value.

Matra Bali Guesthouse

Matra Bali Guest House - Canggu Bali Hotels

Price: Less than $30/night

Monthly price: About $335/month

Cleanliness: Exceptionally clean

Comfort: Exceptionally comfortable with huge beds and white sheets allowing for wonderful night’s rest.

Wifi: Yes, it’s slow but the wifi in Bali is generally not the fastest.  It is however, enough for doing most standard tasks online. Streaming video is gonna be a bit tough though.

Air Conditioning: Yes

Hot Water: Yes

Noise level: Exceptionally quiet and peaceful.

Friendliness: The staff is warm and welcoming

Matra Bali is a Balinese family owned chain of 3 Canggu Bali hotels – Matra Bali Guesthouse, Matra Bali Surf Camp, and Matra Bali Coliving/Coworking all located in or near Berawa.  I’ve stayed at all 3 locations multiple times now and recommend them highly. The family who owns Matra Bali are warm and friendly people and it’s evident in the vibe of each of their places.

If I had to choose a favorite from the Matra Bali locations, it would be Matra Bali Guesthouse. It has a serene atmosphere and a rice field and yoga shala in the back of the property. I feel at home at Matra Guesthouse, and always feel rested and recharged.  It’s less than a 5 minute motorbike ride from Berawa Beach. If heading to Batu Bolong or Echo Beach, it’s about a 10 minute motorbike ride across famous/infamous Canggu shortcut. The reason I don’t have Matra Bali Guesthouse as my first choice is because I prefer surfing near Batu Bolong as opposed to Berawa.  Additionally, I also prefer working from a coworking space called Dojo, which is in Echo Beach, so I find myself crossing the shortcut multiple times a day, which can be a pain because the shortcut road is prone to potholes and heavy traffic.

Canggu Nadi Guest House

Canggu Nadi Guest House - Canggu Bali Hotels

Price: Less than $17/night

Monthly price: About $335/month

Cleanliness: Very clean

Comfort: Comfortable, allowing for great night’s rest.

Canggu Nadi Guesthouse is conveniently located on Batu Bolong road less that 5 minutes motorbike ride from Batu Bolong Beach.  What made it initially appealing to me was the decor of the rooms. Although very affordable, the rooms have a bit of style making for a pleasing living environment.  Taking into consideration the price, amenities, and distance from the beach, Canggu Nadi Guesthouse is an excellent value compared to the average Canggu Bali hotel.

Matra Co Working & Co Living

Matra Co Working Co Living - Canggu Bali Hotels

Price: About $30/night

Monthly price: Around $400/month

Cleanliness: Exceptionally clean

Comfort: Exceptionally comfortable with huge beds and white sheets allowing for wonderful night’s rest.

Wifi: Yes.  This Matra Bali location is geared toward digital nomads so they offer 2 wifi options.  The first option is free and available to all guests, whereas the premium option is in the neighborhood of $100/month but promises an ultra fast connection.  I found the free option to be functional for most standard internet tasks, but streaming video will probably be an issue.

Air Conditioning: Yes

Hot Water: Yes

Noise level: Quiet and peaceful.

Friendliness: The staff is warm and welcoming

Matra Bali Coworking/Coliving is located in Berawa, and resembles more of a large apartment complex as opposed to the standard Canggu Bali hotel or homestay.  It caters to the working digital nomad and has a great cafe on the top floor with an ocean view, workspaces and air conditioned conference rooms. There is also a large pool on the first floor suitable for swimming short laps.  The rooms are exceptionally comfortable, bright, and clean. Rooms on the third floor have a view of the ocean. Matra Bali Coworking/Coliving is about a 15-20 minute walk, or less that 5 minute motorbike ride from Berawa Beach.  However, if heading to Batu Bolong or Echo Beach, you’ll have to cross the shortcut or go through Jl. Raya Canggu.

Dabumito Guest House

Dabumito Guest House - Canggu Bali Hotels

Price: About $22/night

Monthly price: About $335/month

Cleanliness: Exceptionally clean

Comfort: Exceptionally comfortable allowing for wonderful night’s rest.

Air Conditioning: Yes

Hot Water: Yes

Noise level: Quiet and peaceful.

Friendliness: The staff is warm and welcoming

Dabumito Guest House is located in a very quiet and peaceful part of Berawa, down a small alley, tucked away from the street.  It’s very peaceful and has all its rooms circled around a pool. I once lived here for almost 6 months and felt very much at home.  It’s about a 15-20 minute walk or less than 5 minute motorbike ride to Berawa Beach.

Matra Bali Surf Camp

Matra Bali Surf Camp - Canggu Bali Hotels

Price: About $30/night

Monthly price: About $335/month

Cleanliness: Exceptionally clean

Comfort: Exceptionally comfortable allowing for wonderful night’s rest.

Wifi: Yes, it’s slow but the wifi in many Canggu Bali hotels is generally not the fastest.  It is however, enough for doing most standard tasks online. Streaming video is gonna be a bit tough though.

Air Conditioning: Yes

Hot Water: Yes

Friendliness: The staff is warm and welcoming

Matra Bali Surf Camp is located near Berawa but tucked away in a small local residential neighborhood.  It’s still probably only a little over 5 minutes motorbike ride from Berawa Beach. It has a nice pool and lush trees, and has an amazing view of the rice fields from the upper story rooms and kitchen.  The location is very peaceful and quiet, and the sunset views are incredible.
